Using the sun for hair lighting

In the studio we use a hair light to outline the subject, create impact, and separate the subject from the background. This is easy to do in the studio with a studio light positioned above the model aimed towards her hair, it’s also possible to do with natural lighting. In this particular shot we placed the model so the sun is above and behind her acting is a hair light creating a nice edge light along her body. Although, placing the sun directly behind the model puts her face in the shade. To get light in her eyes I used a 580 EXII Speedlite in a small soft box in ettl mode (I will cover this technique in future post). Here’s the resulting image.
